A destination for cyclists
Popular with cyclists and clubs, the network of country lanes around Chesham has limitless possibilities for personalised routes around the Chilterns National Landscape / AONB. The Chilterns Cycleway and National Cycle Route 57 both cover the area, taking some of the finest Chilterns’ scenery. To begin a route in Chesham, non-folding cycles can be transported on the Metropolitan line outside peak times.
Cyclists can avoid busier routes out of Chesham, by choosing lanes leading to the hilltop villages with rewarding pubs and cafes. For off-road cyclists, there are plenty of bridleways with gradients to suit all abilities.
The Chilterns Cycleway
The 273km (170-mile) circular Chilterns Cycleway is mainly on-road and is signposted throughout. The route is divided into sections which can be explored individually, allowing time to investigate further bridleways, byways and quiet lanes.
Sections 7, 18, 19 and 20 of the Central Loop of the Chilterns Cycleway provide routes for riders around Chesham and its villages. In addition to Chesham itself, villages visited include Cholesbury, Hawridge, Ley Hill, Ashley Green, Latimer and Chenies.
The whole of the Chilterns Cycleway is available as a digital route map from websites and apps, such as Bikemap, Garmin and Ride With GPS.
National Cycle Route 57
This 101km (63 mile) Sustrans route connects the Cotswolds to Welwyn Garden City, passing through Chesham along the way.
Chiltern Velo Café & Bike Workshop
Chiltern Velo Café & Bike Workshop in Hawridge has a café and outdoor terrace. It’s a popular pitstop for walkers and bikers. Cytech trained workshop technicians carry out bike servicing and repairs and offer first hand advice on any cycling related issue.
Volt Bikes are also sold here.
Cychemistry
Throughout many years of working in the retail environment for bicycles, Mark at Cychemistry has built up a vast knowledge of most of the brands on the market today, including a lot of obscure ones. Though not a stockist of ‘big brands’, Cychemistry offers expert unbiased advise, custom builds and services for all levels of bikes from children’s cycle to ‘full gold’ service.
Look out for the striking turquoise and erllow shop exterior on Red Lion Stret, close to the Market Squar end of Chesham high Street.
