The taste of autumn at Chiltern Ridge
Tucked away on a two-acre site in rural Chartridge, this family-run business produces apple juice for local shops and supermarkets and more besides.
From September until mid-November, the Chiltern ridge apple presses are kept busy with homegrown apples of all varieties (cooking apples, eating apples and even pears) brought in by locals boasting anything from an orchard to a single tree. The fruit is chipped and pressed and the juice is then flash pasteurised, bottled, labelled and dated.
Absolutely nothing is added: sweetness and taste depends entirely on the fruit itself. A mature apple tree can produce enough fruit in a single crop to make an astonishing 60–100 bottles of juice, depending on the ripeness and variety of the fruit. Cider-making kits are on sale for customers to create their own home brew from just a few bottles or a more bountiful crop. Information on apples suitable to bring for juicing
A variety of local produce
Free range eggs, and pullets, are other specialities of Chiltern Ridge. Black Rocks, White Leghorns and Bluebells are amongst the ever-growing variety of hens roaming the site where birds that can no longer lay live as pets. Advice is also offered on all breeds of pullets for sale, each of which has its own particular characteristics. During the apple season, cross-breed / Welsh lop-eared pigs are also raised here, to be sold on site as freezer-ready pork.
