Charity shop with a difference

Chesham’s Workaid Shop is something you won’t find elsewhere. This ‘charity shop with a difference‘ specialises in a fascinating mix of tools and hardware, gardening equipment, electrical items, craft materials, patterns, wools and yarns, fabrics and general haberdashery, sewing and knitting machines.

All have been donated to Workaid, who empower young people in Africa (and the UK) to develop the skills and knowledge needed to find gainful employment or start their own business. They do this by refurbishing donated tools to a high standard and shipping them to training centres and self-help organisations. Every year, they send enough tools to help 9000 people learn the skills they need to help themselves out of poverty.

The building itself is part of Chesham’s history of the 4 Bs: Beer, Boots, Brushes and Baptists. It occupies The Old Boot Factory, built in 1854 and owned from then until 2008 by Giffard Newton who make working and occupational footwear.

Items on sale change weekly, depending on what’s surplus to Workaid projects or more valuable to sell.

The Workaid Shop is open Thursday, Friday & Saturday from 10am – 4pm. Chesham, HP5 2AA

Workaid offers a unique opportunity for people with mild to moderate learning support needs through its supported workshop. To find out more contact the Workaid supported workshop The Hub.
