Look out for egrets

Keep an eye open for egrets on The River Chess and around the Chess Valley. Little egrets are regular visitors to Chesham on the stretches of the river that flow through the town. These small white herons are easily distinguished from the much larger great white egrets by their black legs and huge, bright yellow feet.

Great white egrets also love the Chess, and only a few pairs are thought to breed in the UK. You are most likely to spot them in the spring and winter months, fishing in the waters around the village of Latimer. The Chess Valley Walk is the ideal way to get there from Chesham, at any time of the year. The Chess Valley Walk logo features the little egret, so distinctive of the area all year round. Follow the Chess Valley Walk on the well-signposted routes from Chesham.
