Bluebells love the woodlands around Chesham, where sunshine filtering through beech trees warms a shimmering sea of blue.
Their heady perfume and spectacular displays make this a magical time for a country stroll or longer walks.
To round off the outing, stop for refreshment at a village pub.
Start at The Crown pub at Ley Hill for a choice of long or short walks at bluebell time. The (6km / 3.8 mile) Ley Hill Circular Walk includes Cowcroft Wood Nature Reserve, an easy walk from the pub. For a longer circular route from Chesham’s station, try the Tylers Hill, Ley Hill and Chess walk. This quiet and peaceful 8km (5 mile) walk also takes in the Crown pub and passes along the River Chess behind The Pheasant pub. The Captains Wood Walk (9km / 5.7 mile) links the valley fields of Chesham Vale with Hawridge village and Captain’s Wood – an ancient woodland and designated nature reserve. The Full Moon pub overlooking Hawridge and Cholesbury Commons is another ideal spot to stop for a coffee or lunch. Walk on across the commons to The White Lion at St Leonards, with its lovely garden views.
